DAVEN's Acres

As
lifelong professional breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs, we are
dedicated to breeding a combination of qualities; most important is
temperament,
followed by conformation and type. We strive to improve the breed. We
are then committed to making sure that the pups that we encourage to be
born find
good homes with loving and responsible owners.
Make no mistake…dog ownership is a great responsibility! Most of our
dogs live a healthy minimum of ten years!
Please remember that we are here to assist you, not only with your
purchase of a pup, but with information and advice throughout the life
of your pet.
We are always just a phone call or an e-mail away!
ABOUT US &
OUR DOGS
I became a breeding and showing enthusiast in 1984 when I met John
McCartney, a longtime handler and breeder of Alaskan Malamutes through
my
first husband. John introduced me to Edward Finnegan, another longtime
handler and breeder of Alaskan Malamutes and Akitas. They were my
“mentors.”
I had Akitas, Bullmastiffs, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Doberman
Pinschers, German Shepherds and Newfoundlands when growing up and prior
to meeting
Douglas in May of 1989. I also worked for Richard Tomita of J-B
Wholesale Pet Supplies at his kennel, Jacquet Boxers & Shibas, (World
Famous even then
for his Champion Boxers!) That is where I met my very first Shiba Inu
and I absolutely adored the “little cousin” to the Akita and already
having Akitas,
I decided that they were definitely a breed I wanted to raise!
Doug’s parents and he had raised, shown and raced sled dogs including
Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds and knew both John &
Ed.
We began using DAVEN’S as our kennel prefix in 1994, combining the
extensive experience of the more than twenty years each of us had
raising,
training, breeding and showing dogs. By 1998, we each earned a degree
from SUNY Cobleskill in Animals/Agriculture, and our son, Allen was
born.
Over the years, we have raised and/or shown many breeds, including
Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, American Eskimos, Anatolian Shepherds,
Bullmastiffs,
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Chihuahuas, Doberman Pinschers, German
Shepherds, Samoyeds, Siberian Huskies, Shiba Inus, & Pomeranians.
Each breeding is carefully thought out and planned, assessing the
qualities and faults of each of the parents and their backgrounds. We
spend hours everyday
cleaning, caring for and socializing our dogs. We strive to improve the
breed by only allowing the best representatives of the breed to be used
for breeding.
(That doesn’t always mean that dogs used as breeders have to be the
number one show dog! As many top breeders will tell you, some of the
best dogs never
get shown for one reason or another!)
*Puppies with breed disqualifications are sold strictly as pets and
companions with limited registration privileges and are not to be used
for breeding.*
*Full registration privileges are reserved for those puppies meeting at
least the minimum standards of quality for each breed.*
Good temperaments are of paramount importance in our breeding program.
We believe that sound animals are achieved by breeding a combination of
sound
temperament, correct conformation and correct type in conjunction with
sound breeding practices.
Many of our dogs have lived to ripe old ages…
CH. George, an Akita, and his grandson Mo, were 13+ when they passed on.
Another Akita, Ziba, was 14. That’s ancient for Akitas!
Our oldest Shiba so far has been Sheba, who was just over 16 years when
she passed away.
Her daughter Kitty is now 14 and still bounces around the house like a
puppy!
All of our dogs are well-socialized and raised in the house with our 40
or so other dogs, (many of whom are now retired!) our children, Robert
(now age 26)
& Matthew Haynes (now age 20), and Allen Varin (now age 10), and our
first grandchild, Oakley (now age 3)!
Proper training and supervision of any breed is strongly recommended!
Especially with children!
All of DAVEN’S puppies are wormed at 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of
age, and then again at 16 weeks of age, if they are still residing with
us.
We routinely worm all older dogs in the kennel every three months. We
use Nemex 2 and/or Panacur under the advice of our veterinarian.
We use a standard Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza & Parvovirus puppy
vaccine.
Others vaccinations, such as Rabies, Kennel Cough (Bordetella),
Coronavirus, Leptospirosis and Lyme disease, etc.,
are added as the pups’ immune systems mature, and as otherwise necessary
and advised by our veterinarian, and may vary based on exposure to the
different types of diseases prevalent at any specific time, and in
specific areas of the country.
Our adults are routinely vaccinated once a year with a combination
vaccine as per our veterinarian’s instructions and all rabies
vaccinations are kept current.
